For most of its history, programming meant typing every line yourself. That is changing fast. AI assistants now draft functions, explain unfamiliar codebases, write tests and even carry a task across several files on their own. The question is no longer whether AI will write code — it already does — but what that leaves for the developer.
From Autocomplete to Agents
The first wave of AI coding tools finished the line you were typing. The current wave works differently: you describe an outcome, and an agent plans the steps, edits the files, runs the commands and reports back. The unit of work has moved from a line of code to a whole task.
That shift is why “vibe coding” became a familiar phrase. A working prototype that once took a week can now take an afternoon — as long as someone knows what to ask for and how to judge the result.
What Stays Human
Generated code is easy to produce and easy to get wrong. Someone still has to decide what should be built, choose the architecture, think about security and performance, and notice when an answer that looks right is quietly broken. Those are judgment calls, and judgment comes from understanding how things actually work.
This is why fundamentals matter more, not less. A developer who understands data, state, networking and the browser can steer an AI precisely. One who doesn’t can only hope the output is correct.
The Developer as Director
The role is moving closer to that of a director or an editor: setting the goal, breaking it into clear tasks, reviewing what comes back and keeping the whole product coherent. Design sense, product thinking and clear communication become part of the craft.
Coding is not disappearing. The typing is shrinking, and the thinking is taking its place. The developers who thrive will be the ones who treat AI as a fast, capable teammate — and stay responsible for everything it ships.
Programlama, tarihinin büyük bölümünde her satırı kendi elinizle yazmak anlamına geliyordu.
